Avoid These Common Mistakes When Filing Your ITIN Application

Many common errors can delay an ITIN renewal application. These mistakes generally center on missing information or insufficient supporting documentation. Not renewing your ITIN on time can cause delays in receiving your refund. Don’t get stuck with your application renewal.

Here are some common mistakes to avoid now so as not to get stuck later.

  1. Missing W-7 Applications – In order to renew your ITIN, you must submit a completed, new W-7 application along with either original documents or copies of documents certified by the issuing agency.
  2. Did not indicate the reason for applying – When applying, you need to indicate the reason why you are submitting your W-7 application. Don’t forget.
  3. Missing a completed foreign address – When renewing an ITIN, if Reason B (non-resident alien) is marked, you must include a complete foreign address on your Form W-7.
  4. Mailing the incorrect identification documents – If you are mailing in your ITIN renewal application, don’t forget to include your original identification documents or copies certified by the issuing agency and any other required attachments. You must also include the ITIN assigned to you and the name under which it was issued online 6e-f.
  5. Insufficient supporting documentation, such as U.S. residency documentation or official documentation to support name changes. In most cases, dependents are also required to supply residency documentation.
  6. Did not include a tax return to validate a tax benefit – Spouses and dependents residing outside the U.S. who would’ve been claimed for a personal exemption should NOT renew their ITINs this year, UNLESS they are filing their own tax return, or they qualify for an allowable tax benefit.
